“I’m really rusty, Kyra. I doubt this is going to work,” said Lou, staring through narrowed eyes at the baby grand piano.

“You don’t have to be in concert mode. Just play well enough to carry the tune, tell Rob what you did or didn’t enjoy about his rendition of the song, and share a few thoughts on how he can make it better.”

Kyra smiled inside at her clever idea. Terpsichore had suggested Lou get involved in Rob’s practice sessions. When Kyra remembered Lou once telling her she’d taken piano lessons as a child, the idea for getting them together fell into place. Once she worked a bit of magic, she was positive nature would take its course.

“Did you warn him it’s been years since I did anything more than tap out ‘Chopsticks’ or ‘Heart and Soul’?” said Lou, sitting on the bench.

“It’s not important. Playing the number he’ll perform in the competition is what matters.” Kyra opened the file she’d been holding, pulled out two pieces of sheet music, and placed them one behind the other in front of Lou. “This is the one he’s singing.”

“‘I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You’? Why did he pick an old Elvis classic?”

“He didn’t pick it, I did,” said Kyra. “And I had my reasons. For starters, other than Wayne Newton, who’s a better representative of Las Vegas than Elvis? The melody has a lovely bluesy tone and heartwarming lyrics. Rob can pretend he’s singing to one special girl, and every woman within earshot will think it’s her. He’ll captivate both the judges and the crowd. Go ahead, try a few bars.”

Lou began fiddling with the keys. She’d removed her makeup and changed from her waitress costume into a pair of snug-fitting jeans and a sweater the color of cognac. The rich amber of the textured wool complemented her hazel eyes and light brown hair to perfection, while the lack of cosmetics emphasized her natural beauty.

Walking behind Lou, Kyra raised her arms and chanted her wish internally, while at the same time outlining the young woman’s slim silhouette. In seconds, Lou’s fingers traversed the keyboard in a confident and practiced manner, and she finished the piece with a flourish.

“That was wonderful,” said Kyra, returning to Lou’s side. “Very professional.”

“I don’t think I ever sounded so good.” Lou gazed at her hands, then at Kyra with a dazed expression. “It must be the piano.”

“Piano or not, it was fabulous. Rob will love it. Be encouraging and tell him he’s going to knock the judges’ socks off.” Kyra rested her forearms on the baby grand. “You won’t be lying. He does sound great.”

“I know.” Lou’s cheeks turned a becoming shade of pink. “I heard him at one of the elimination contests, but he sang a different song. And won’t he be expected to perform the big number if he wins? You know, the one they’ll be taping for a CD and television commercials?”
